A Unique Mediterranean Guitar

This guitar was built for a very good player in Los Angeles. It is a non cutaway Mediterranean model with Indian rosewood back and sides and a very nice, figured sitka spruce top. The binding and pickguard are tortoise shell. The logo and fingerboard dots are abalone. Although it is not a real fancy instrument, it is framed by a simple request form the buyer: he wanted his daughter's name on the guitar somewhere. The hard part of this instrument was coming up with the fulfillment of that request in a tasteful manner. You can see the results below. I think the result is stunning.

Headstock and Inlay
Headstock and Inlay
The headstock of this guitar is done in Rosewood. The logo is in abalone shell. The "Vivian" inlay is mother of pearl inlaid in ebony and the entire inlay is then placed in the headstock. The pearl is less than a 1/16" wide.

The client wanted his daughter's name inlaid somewhere on the guitar. After much thought and discussion, the inlay was executed by Rich Lipscher, an inlay artist in Baltimore. The piece is ebony inlaid with mother of pearl. The pearl is less than a 1/16" wide. Rich is really an artist! And the best part is I now have the capability to do this type of very intricate inlay in-house!
